Music has been a constant throughout Kim’s life, moving through classical piano, voice, guitar, songwriting, recording, and performance.

Completion, released in 2020, captures one particular moment in that much longer musical life: five songs brought fully into form and sent out into the world.

What follows is the original story of the project, written at the time of its release.

Completion (2020): Inspired by powerhouse female vocalists, soulful piano licks, and a desire to start and finish a personal creative work, Kim’s new EP, Completion, sets the foundation for a bold leap into a new livelihood and creative process. A blend of soul, acoustic rock, and folk-inspired storytelling, Kim’s thunderous and emotive vocals drive the compilation of four covers and one original track. The title Completion holds double-meaning: Hell-bent on taking a creative project from start to finish, this release represents that conclusive satisfaction so difficult to achieve in ongoing artistic work. In addition to the fulfillment of a finished work of art, each song chosen for the EP represents a major milestone achievement in Kim’s artistic career. The release also serves as a foundation from which to launch her career as a solo performing artist. “It’s a complete circle, encompassing both the act of starting and the act of finishing.”

Throughout Completion, Kim’s undaunted joy and careful attention to phrasing shine. There’s a uniquely moving mix of power and vulnerability in her voice, highlighted by her simple yet elegant accompaniment on guitar and piano. The songs reflect both her art and her nature. “As a woman, and especially as a woman who is not particularly slight, I have spent my entire life trying to be small and quiet, trying to take up as little space as possible. Singing is the opposite of that. I get so much satisfaction in hearing my own voice booming out through a microphone— It makes me feel like I have found my place in this world.
